Mrs. Isabel Cottrell is a Senior Associate with the Federal Practice Group, and is part of the federal employment group. Mrs. Cottrell is fluent in both English and Spanish and has substantive experience in federal employment. She represents individuals in federal and state employment and labor law matters pertaining to discrimination, prohibited personnel practices, whistleblower reprisal, disciplinary and adverse actions, administrative and union grievances, and disability retirement.
Prior to joining the Federal Practice Group, Mrs. Cottrell worked for two other prestigious Washington, D.C. law firms that focused on federal and state employment and labor law areas. She has extensive experience managing cases throughout various stages of litigation in federal, state, and administrative proceedings.
Mrs. Cottrell earned her Juris Doctorate from New York Law School. During law school, Mrs. Cottrell put her Spanish-speaking skills to great use when she served an internship at the National Center for Refugee & Immigrant Children. She volunteered as a student representative for the Unemployment Action Center in Manhattan. She also served as a judicial intern at the New York State Supreme Court for the Honorable Doris Ling-Cohan.
Mrs. Cottrell graduated from the University of the South with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Spanish.
Mrs. Cottrell is admitted to practice in both Virginia and the District of Columbia.

August 2020 -Mrs. Cottrell achieved a favorable result for an employee who was originally denied disability retirement by OPM. Upon review of Mrs. Cottrell’s reconsideration request, OPM granted the client disability retirement.
Complainant v. Federal Fire Department, September 2018– Mrs. Cottrell obtained a five-figure settlement against the Department of the Navy’s Federal Fire Department where she represented a female employee who faced sexual harassment and retaliation after she reported the harassment.
Complainant v. Dep’t of the Air Force, March 2018—Mrs. Cottrell obtained a complicated settlement against the Department of the Air Force where she represented a female employee who faced sex discrimination and retaliation.
Complainant v. Department of the Army, July 2017—Mrs. Cottrell obtained a sizable settlement against the Department of the Army where she represented an employee that suffered severe race discrimination and retaliation.
Complainant v. Defense Media Activity, July 2017—Mrs. Cottrell obtained a liability finding after a default judgment against the Defense Media Activity for retaliation, age, gender, and disability discrimination on behalf of a client who was denied an accommodation of a flexible schedule and telework and suspended. Mrs. Cottrell was able to obtain a sizable settlement that included relief beyond that awarded in the liability finding.
Complainant v. Department of Veterans Affairs, December 2016— Mrs. Cottrell obtained a sizable settlement against the Department of Veterans Affairs on behalf of a client who had a job offer rescinded as a result of her pregnancy.
